Sultan Said, a handsome 29 years old gentleman, suffered a severe car accident 9 years ago and got spinal cord injury, which made his movements were confined within a wheelchair since then. He and his family had tried nearly all treatments before for his condition; however, no obvious improvements were shown. The quality of his life was poor and he does want a change.
While admission, Sultan was noticed impaired movement function with both arms and legs. He could not use them as normal people. He could not use his hands either, which made him unable to move his wheelchair by himself and should get help from others in his daily life.
His superficial as well as deep sensation of touch under the plane of T7 were lost on both sides, presenting as he had no feeling under the level of his waist, and he had no motor control either. His muscle strength was affected after the accident, with 4/5 at the proximal end and 0/5 at the distal end of bilateral arms.
Besides, Sultan also suffered from urination and defection incontinence.
Combining the medical history, physician examinations, lab and radiography findings, specialists of our cooperated decided to perform intra-spinal surgical exploration via posterior-middle cervical approach for Sultan, integrating with stem cell therapy via lumbar puncture as well as rehabilitation training.
With 24-days’ hospitalization of integrated treatments for spinal cord injury in China, Sultan’s condition got improved gradually.
The most significant improvement is that Sultan has better movement with his arms compared with his prior condition, as he can move his arms and use his hands now, which enables him move around his wheelchair by himself. Although other improvements are not obvious, Sultan is quite happy with this and is working hard in the rehabilitation therapy so as to consolidate the treatment effects of stem cell therapy.
